Use of Language in Miss Julie Essay Example

Utilization of Language in Miss Julie Essay Example Utilization of Language in Miss Julie Essay Utilization of Language in Miss Julie Essay Article Topic: Play The utilization of language in Miss Julie is entangled and straightforward all through the play and furthermore was written in 1888. The language of the play is Swedish composed by August Strindberg however was converted into English by Kenneth McLeish and when you make an interpretation of a language into English its extremely difficult to bode well. As I would like to think the dramatist utilizes various sorts of language; and furthermore how the play has various sorts high and low classes for instance Miss Julie is a high class individual since she is the Lordships little girl and she introduced by thusly her language:Not to specify vanity. Wear Juan is that your name? Or on the other hand Joseph, out of the Bible? That is it, Joseph this shows Miss Julies language is entangled as she is the Lordships little girl, in the play Miss Julie doesnt utilize basic sentences so a lot, so she shows she is a higher class than everybody in the play and she makes advanced references. In any case, here and there in the play Jean utilizes muddled language too this demonstrated Jean has an aspiration to be a high status individual despite the fact that Jean is a hireling, a lower class The courtesan of everything, the main decoration of the house. Then again Kristen the cook utilizes a great deal of basic language, Kristen is a character that follows the requests and shows regard that is the reason Strindberg in the play consistently makes them talk in basic language Shes consistently been wild. In any case, more awful these most recent couple of days, since her commitment completed This play highlights a significant number of analogies, and is an enormous factor in this play too, for instance when Kristen and Jean was discussing Miss Julies hound called Diana. Sick, ha! Shes been grinding away with that mutt at the cabin, and now shes Miss Julie wont have it. Diana is going out with this mutt with Diana high status going out with the guardians crossbreed low status is an image of Miss Julie and Jean relationship by Diana speaking to Miss Julie and the watchmen crossbreed speaking to Jean this is a case of Strindberg utilizing similitudes in the play. Besides there is imagery where Jean and Miss Julie disclosed to one another their fantasies Im on a high column, Ive climbed as far as possible up and I cannot get down again Strindberg did this to show that Miss Julie is a high status individual yet too need to get down from the high class, anyway Strindberg composed Jeans dream distinctively The home with the brilliant egg, I need to burglarize it. I climb and I climb trunks so thick, elusive, Strindberg is demonstrating that Jean need to be a high class individual and shows desire yet he cannot reach to the top. This play has distinctive characteristic and unnatural language, as I would see it I figure Strindberg did this for the crowd to be energetic and carry vitality to the play. Be that as it may, for most plays generally utilizes exceptionally characteristic language Shes wild again today around evening time. Miss Julie. Wild demonstrating the play is making truly quick rhythm pace in light of the fact that the discourse arrives at the point. Anyway some of the time the play gets unnatural with stops and breaks between the sentences There was somebody there: a pink gown, white stockings, it was you. Wonderful language is additionally utilized, where Miss Julie and Jean having a monolog See, your Ladyship, a pooch can loosen up on your Ladyships shoulder, a pony can feel your hand stroking him, however a hireling as I would like to think Strindberg utilizes graceful language to make it sort of progressively sentimental sonnet. Questions are use in the play for the crowd as well as for the entertainers too in light of the fact that they acting should be a naturalistic as conceivable I might suspect Strindberg did this to make the crowd and on-screen characters to utilize their sense, Miss Julie utilize a ton of inquiries when Miss Julie posed Kristen to flee with herself and Jean Youve never been abroad. Never observed the world. Its dazzling, riding in a train shows that Miss Julie is experiencing such a large number of feelings to begin another existence with the hirelings. Vernacular is utilized to show the crowd each character the manner in which they talk if its formal or slang in this play centers around high and low classes so it must be formal Vous voulez plaisanter, madame. Jean character shows that he is knowledgeable for a hireling and dazzles Miss Julie that he can communicate in another dialect. In the event that I was Miss Julie my vernacular will be conventional English inflection since this play is truly in the times past where ladies wear dresses and men wear suits likewise for workers wear uniform. Kristin I think she talks formal since she is a worker and have regard for Miss Julie. Strindberg believes that the play ought to be persistent, so the story streams straight through on the grounds that by having breaks it ruins the show and the crowd wont comprehend the message of the play some of the time many wont comprehend what the play is about. One of my commonsense I did a piece of the play where Kristen discovered that Jean and Miss Julie engaged in extramarital relations, I was Kristen and when I played the scene I needed to think legitimate approach to state while Im acting on the grounds that there are such huge numbers of approaches to investigate the language that is the reason language is so significant. As far as concerns me as Kristin I was somewhat utilizing proper language there was no slang yet in addition I resented a similar time at Jean. I need to consider the manner of speaking if Im talking formal and indignantly at Jean and its extremely troublesome seeing that this play is a naturalistic play.

How did baseball influence America - 821 Words

Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball, Jacques Barzun, the social commentator, wrote more than a quarter of a century ago. Fundamentally, Barzun said in an interview last week, things havent changed. Baseball still reflects our society, its just that our society has changed. Baseball, Barzun says, once expressed the unification of America, the teamwork involved. When we look at the triumphs of American technology on a large scale, he says, we see the fine workings of a national machinery - everybody in every department cooperating effectively with no gaps in time. Modernism and the Holocaust Essay example Example For Students

Modernism and the Holocaust Essay example The emergence of the Holocaust and the Nazi party views can largely be determined as a result of modernity, as a reaction against the times. Yet, at the same time it can be argued that the National Socialist party can be characterized as a modern development. Modris Eksteins, George Mosse, and Zygmundt Bauman offer an in-depth look into both the anti-modern and modern aspects of the Nazi movement and the resulting Holocaust. Eksteins work proves to be the most thorough of the three works in following the growth and progress of the Nazi party and Hitlers rise to power. Bauman covers more of the political side of the National Socialists, and especially appeals to morality and ethics, or rejection thereof, to portray his very opinionated points. Mosse, on the other hand, analyzes the people who fell victim to the ideology of the Nazi party, In a sense, this study is a historical analysis of people captured to such an extent by an ideology that they lost sight of civilized law and civilized attitudes toward their fellow men, (Mosse, 9). For all three authors, modernity is the major force for change- the change that results in the rise of the national socialist party. For Ekstein, culture is a social phenomenon in which modernism is the principal urge of the time. He focuses on social change featuring the Great War as a great catalyst for change, For our preoccupation with speed, newness, transience, and inwardness- with life lived, as the jargon puts it, ?in the fast lane- to have taken hold, an entire scale of values and beliefs had to yield pride of place, and the Great Wars was, as we shall see, the single most significant event in that development, (Ekstein, xiv). Ekstein uses the example of Germany within the novel to express his points. Before the Great War there had been a sense of morality and decency between warring nations, a code of ethics the British and French armies continued to follow. Germany, however, through the old-fashioned spirit of war out the door and used any means possible to win, means that were characterized by modern technological advancements and what Ekstein refers to as Total War. For Ekstein, the first World War was a gateway into modernity which paved the way for the rise of the National Socialist party to come to power in Germany. Ekstein provides a thoroughly modern point of view, concerning the years following World War I, in writing about the culture of an extremely civilized Europe where standards of living had been rising steadily despite strictly enforced class rules and large disparities between the ultra-rich and everyone else. From this, the National Socialist party evolved and rose and became a headlong plunge into the future, toward a ?brave new world, (Ekstein, 303). The people of Germany, for the first time in decades, felt a sense of belongingness and patriotism toward their country. The political and social conflicts that characterized their country in the past had disappeared and they became a unified country under The Spirit of Aust!It was the rise of Hitler to power and his implementation of the National Socialism Movement that led to the Holocaust, which constituted a rejection of Judaism, Communists, Jehovah Witnesses, Gypsies, homosexuals, and anyone else not belonging to the Aryan race. This rejection resulted in the mass deliberate killing of these people by the Nazis in their exterminatory anti-Semitism. They used this as an excuse to commence a systematic genocide against the European Jews as an answer to the Jewish Question. The final solution to rid Germany and all of Europe of the Jewish vermin was to send them to concentration camps where they would eventually be gassed if the harsh environment hadnt taken their life beforehand. In analyzing the morality and ethics of the people involved in the Holocaust movement, Mosse explains that the overall morale of the German people after the first World War allowed a movement like National Socialism to develop and gain the popularity that it did. Modernism in Art Essay On the contrary, they were men and women who wanted to maintain their property and their superior status over the working class, (Mosse 7). The National Socialist revolution wasnt just a revolution of the soul, but instead it was the ideal bourgeois revolution because it threatened none of the vested economic interests of the middle class. The Volkish thought established itself in the belief that the Jews stood for modernity in all its destructiveness? The Jew, or rather the stereotype which Volkish thought made of him, is therefore central to any analysis and understanding if this German ideology, (Mosse 7). This forged a direct connection between the German revolution and National Socialism as Hitler gave focus to his ?German revolution by making it into an anti-Jewish revolution, (Mosse 7). This movement triumphed in Germany because it had so deeply penetrated the fabric of the national belief. It is believed by some that Germany was unprepared for the Hitlers rise to power and to Nazi movement, but according to Mosse, one trend of German thought could become so strong that millions of people accepted it as the only solution to Germanys dilemma, (Mosse 8).Bauman expresses his own views of Nazism and the Holocaust in his Modernity and the Holocaust. He explains how the ideology of the National Socialist movement was a rejection of modernity in which the result was a mass genocide of the Jewish population. They identified modernity as the rule of economic and monetary values, and charged Jewish racial characteristics with responsibility for such a relentless assault on the Volkish mode of life and standards of human worth, (Bauman 61). A paradox emerges here, however, in that racism is a product of modernization. According to Bauman, racism could not exist without the advancement of modern science, modern technology and modern forms of state power, (Bauman 61). He continues to explaining that the murder of Jews was an exercise in the rational management of society. And a systematic attempt to deploy in its service the stance, philosophy and the precepts of applied science, (Bauman 72). The mass genocide due to anti-Semitism is a modern phenomenon because the possibility of such an event is inconceivable without an advanced state of modernity. Modern exterminatory anti-Semitism could only have been effective if it was connected to modern bureaucracy, which was at the time, the Nazi party, racism is a policy first, ideology second. Like all policies, it needs organization, managers, and experts, (Bauman 74). The information and beliefs these authors expound portray two phenomenon that are so closely related yet seem so paradoxical. Nazism itself, represents certain characteristics of modernity from which they intended to move away. Yet the National Socialist belief is a deep rooted Volkish ideology, fueled by the German revolution as a revolt and resentment of modernity. Thus, the extermination of the Jewish population, or any not of the Aryan race, represented a negative reaction against the modernity which they resented. Yet, at the same time their anti-Semitic beliefs and actions represented modernity itself. The National Socialist movement and the resulting Holocaust represent the dark side of modernity, while at the same time striving to maintain anti-modernist beliefs. It is in this sense that the two events, Nazism and the Holocaust, can be interpreted as a reaction against modernity, which at the same time viewed as modern developments. The work of the three authors serve to uncover this paradoxical relationship and give a in-depth understanding of the role of modernity in the history of Germany through the early 20th century.

Wise Childrens Narrative Voice Essay Example

Wise Childrens Narrative Voice Essay Angela Carters Wise Children is the fictional autobiography of Dora Chance, looking at both past experiences and, from the point of view of the author, real time events. It is written in the first person, from the point of view of Dora Chance, written in such a way as to convey the thoughts and feelings of the narrator without a direct notification of such thoughts and feelings. This means that for Angela Carter to put across Doras feelings and opinions of the events of the novel many other literary techniques must be involved. The narrator herself uses many colloquialisms and phrases, sometimes turning them into puns or twisting them to a different outcome, for example and what does the poor robin do then? Bugger the robin! this addresses the narrators point of view on formalities and stereotypes, allowing the reader to come to terms with her unique style. She acknowledges events and ideas which may be uncomfortable to a modern audience and gently pokes fun at them, for example Ill do it on the horsehair sofa, do what? What do you think? This indicates to the reader that the normal taboos of society do not necessarily apply and that the narrator is open with her view and opinions, this allows the reader to trust the narrator. The point of view of the reader changes as the book progresses, for example, within the first pages of the book the narrator directly involves the reader within the surroundings, for example, Dora states this is my room although the room or any event leading up to entering the room is never described the scene is immediately set and the reader can imagine the room. For example, she suggests the reader take a good look at the signed photos stuck in the dressing table mirror causing the reader to focus on the idea of the object as though they were actually shown around the room. There are at least two instances in which Dora involves the reader as though interacting with them Theres Westminster Abbey, see? careful, the paper is starting to crumble these allow the reader to feel involved and therefore more trusting of the narrator as the book progresses. However occasionally Dora refers to these real-time moments as though in the past tense, for example I squinted as opposed to I am squinting however at the same time describing events in real-time such as She starts to pour out tea as though the event has just taken place and is being recounted for the benefit of the audience, also in these moments it is apparent that no other character acknowledges the presence of the reader. This change in tenses could be for the benefit of the reader, as it would get tiresome to describe all event as they are happening and have no involvement of the reader. In the book time does not appear to be a linear construct. Dora appears to have the ability to stop time to allow the reader to catch up with current events, which she does so with the command, similar to a direction in a piece of drama, freeze frame. During this it appears that the idea of real-time still exists, as Dora moves from the living room to the attic and directly interacts with the reader again. This is similar to the dramatic technique carried out by the chorus of Greek theatre, in which one or more character directly acknowledges the audience and interacts with them alone and can also interact fully with other characters in the play that do not acknowledge the presence of the audience. It is indicated to the reader some time after, and quite unexpectedly that Dora has e-appeared in the living room and time has begun again with a prompt, another technique used in drama, when a command similar to the one above is used press the button for Play, however, it is uncertain to whom she was addressing the command to, she could be directly involving the audience again, as the command had no speech marks, or to herself as a stage direction, or to another character. When Dora describes and explains her family history she does not do so in a straight line, along the way she often refers to characters the reader is unaware of yet, as though she is unaware of this, perhaps she expects she is recalling the stories for her own benefit, as opposed to the benefit of the reader. This means in many places she has to double back on her explanations and descriptions, many times stopping herself in the middle of a sentence to describe something else, for example while showing the reader a picture of her grandmother Estella as Desdemona from Othello she is just about to explain the relevance of the picture when she stops herself, saying wait, Ill explain that later. This technique is supposed to get the reader interested in the events Dora has tactfully not described to them, causing them to read on. Dora often re-tells rumours or stories from other characters, similar to how gossip would be passed on, however this is the first example of where the reliability of the narrator is brought into question, as often stories such as this are retold differently to the original, either deliberately or unintentionally, to make the story seem more interesting or dramatic. Another technique that is used is to talk about a completely different subject after discussing a subject that involves the next subject in some way. For example she describes a story her Uncle Peregrine has told her about her grandmother Estella and then begins to talk about Peregrine, without finishing her story about Estella completely. This gives the impression that this is an after thought, and the narrator is making up as she goes along, improvisation. This gives the narration a natural feel, as opposed to a pre-rehearsed, artificial feel sometimes apparent in other books of this nature; however it can cause some confusion to the reader, who may loose the plot of the novel, making it difficult to understand and thus read, discouraging the reader. The novel is very surreal, in many parts farcical, and some of the events are improbable in real-life. This is a carnivalesque technique and magical realism is used. Much of the surrealism is therefore intentional; however, some of this magical realism could be caused by the narrator herself, who can be described as quite unreliable. Much of the book is based on memory from over 70 years ago, therefore it is understandable that many of the events described in the book cant possible be remembered, for example when Dora was seven she states she can remember going to the pier with her Uncle Peregrine and he was wearing a white suit with a straw bowler hat however this is probably Doras imagination instead of fact, and in a similar way, many of the events could be exaggerated. For example, there was an event in her early twenties of a costume party in which the house caught fire and Dora describes how Saskia was still eating an entire swan in the chaos and everyone was having sex in the garden, this is probably exaggerated. As stated above, the use of a narrator directly involved in the unfolding events is that while describing events that unfold around them they can convey their thoughts and emotions into the scene. A key example of this is the scene just before Tiffany allegedly commits suicide, where she appears on live TV to confront Tristram. Before this scene the tone of the narrator is very brisk and hurried, but mostly cheerful. When the suicide scene unfolds the narrators tone and speed of the novel slows down. The sentences become longer, more eloquent, and expressive. She uses very few colloquialisms and describes her own actions through the scene. This conveys her feelings of worry for Tiffany and uncertainty of what is going to happen through the piece. In conclusion the narrator is what gives the book its unique style and, inevitably, its soul. It allows the reader to imagine the characters of the book as real people, with emotions and faulty memories and opinions, as opposed to a simple and straightforward look of a fictional characters life. Using the narrator Angela Carter has the ability to manipulate linear time and directly involve the reader in the events of the novel.

Bias in News Media essays

Bias in News Media essays It is no mystery that the media has much power in setting cultural guidelines and in shaping political discourse. This is why it is very important that the media is challenged every so often to be fair and accurate, in order to avoid bias. One way the media can show bias is in who they choose to interview. More often than not they will over-rely on "official" sources such as government, corporate and establishment think tanks. For example, FAIR found that in 40 months of Nightline programming, the most frequent guests were Henry Kissinger, Alexander Haig, Elliott Abrams and Jerry Falwell. Progressive and public interest voices were seldomly represented. In order for the media to accurately portray issues, they need to broaden their range of sources. If they do not, those in power have all the say so and the little guys lose out. Another way in which the news can be biased is in lack of diversity. If you really pay attention, how many producers or editors at media outlets are women, colored people, or openly gay or lesbian? For news outlets to fairly and accurately represent a variety of communities, they need to have members of all different races and ethnicities in high up, decision making positions. In a recent study, FAIR's 40-month survey of Nightline found its U.S. guests to be 92 percent white and 89 percent male. A similar survey of PBS's News Hour found its guest list was 90 percent white and 87 percent male. A big problem in news coverage now a days is stereotypes skewing coverage. More and more is seems like coverage of the drug crisis focuses almost all of its attention on African Americans, despite the fact that the majority of drug users are white. Also, coverage of women on welfare focuses tremendously on African-American women, even thought the majority of welfare recipients are not black. More often than not lesbians are shown as "man-hating" and gay men are portrayed as "sexual predators." Interes...

Impact of Global Recession Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Impact of Global Recession - Essay Example This all highlights the significance of this fossil fuel. The world market of oil is such that it is highly controlled by OPEC. In fact, OPEC has been thought to behave like a cartel. It especially behaved like a cartel during the 1970s when an embargo was placed on the Western economies, which plunged their economies into deep recessions (Bouchentouf, 2007). In addition, much of the oil supply is located in highly unstable markets, therefore the market of oil is highly volatile (Behr, 2009). The United States is the third largest producer of oil after Russia and Saudi Arabia (Bouchentouf, 2007). However, it consumes the production of oil drastically to support its huge industrial based economy. The United States also imports much of the oil in the world and Japan and Germany are one of the largest importers of oil. The United States and China are currently the largest consumers of oil (Bouchentouf, 2007).Literature ReviewThe sudden decrease in the price of oil as shown in the figure above was because as the recession hit countries all around the world, demand gradually decreased. Because of the drastic decrease in demand, the OPEC to curb the decreasing prices cut down outputs. World oil demand continuously fell across the period from 2008 to 2009. In 2008, world demand had fallen by 0.2 percent, and in 2009, it had fallen by 0.4 percent. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) had predicted at the beginning of the crash, that the ensuing years would see a decrease in the demand.... It has large importance for the world economy. The demand of oil is such that it is inelastic, that means even if the price rises, people would continue to buy it. Oil is indispensable and is a raw material for various other products. However, oil has an inelastic supply as well, that means since it is a non-renewable resource, it will eventually run out. This all highlights the significance of this fossil fuel. Muhammad & Hadith Essay Example for Free

Muhammad Hadith Essay Muhammad, whose name was taken from the Arabic word hamada which means â€Å"to praise, to glorify,† was born in Mecca, Western Arabia, in 570 CE to Abd bin Al-Muttalib and Amina bint Wahb. His parents were believed to be descendants of Abraham and Hagar, the Egyptian slave who mothered Abraham’s son, Ishmael. The story goes that Abraham fled to Mecca with Hagar and Ishmael after his wife, Sarah, also gave birth to a baby boy (Isaac) and became extremely jealous of Hagar and Ishmael. It was with the assistance of Ishmael that Abraham later built the Ka’bah, Islam’s holiest sanctuary, in Mecca. It is now the destination of pilgrims during the hajj (Fisher. 2005). Muhammad married at the age of twenty-five to Khadijah, a forty-year-old businesswoman who owned the caravans which he was managing at the time. His wife later became his main source of support when he was experiencing difficulties during the early years of his mission. Muhammad recounted an incident which happened when he was forty years old. As his story went, an angel appeared to him when he was in a cave in Mt. Hira during one of his spiritual retreats and told him to recite something. Because he was illiterate, he reportedly refused three times. However, the angel insisted and when Muhammad, at last, relented, the angel gave him the words that would later become the Qur’an’s first words. That was the first of a series of revelations, the exact words of which had been: Proclaim! (or Recite! ) In the name Of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created – Created man, out of A (mere) clot Of congealed blood: Proclaim! And thy Lord Is Most Bountiful,- He Who taught (The use of) the Pen,- Taught man that Which he knew not (Fisher, 2005). That first revelation undoubtedly referred to the creation. It was followed by more revelations which occurred intermittently. Muhammad described the revelations as follows: â€Å"Revelation sometimes comes like the sound of a bell; that is the most painful way. When it ceases I have remembered what was said. Sometimes it is an angel who talks to me like a human, and I remember what he says. † Initially, Muhammad only shared what was revealed to him with his wife and the few people who believed him. However, after three years had elapsed, he was instructed to start preaching to the public what he had received from the revelations (Fisher, 2005). Although he succeeded in winning converts to Islam, his group was persecuted by the Qurayshites (the aristocrats) in spite of the protection provided by his influential uncle, and exiled to an isolated place where they were forced to eat the leaves of trees and the wild foods they could gather in order to survive. The persecution persisted even after his band of Muslim converts was allowed to go back to Mecca after three years. The darkest period in Muhammad’s life was when he turned fifty. It was called the â€Å"Year of Sorrows† because his wife and his uncle who was protecting him died. The Islamic tradition explained that it was approximately during that period of hardship that the â€Å"Night of Ascension† occurred. It was claimed to be the occasion when Muhammad was supposed to have ascended into heaven and met the earlier prophets like Adam, Abraham, and Jesus Christ in Divine proximity, observed what hell and paradise were, and was later blessed by the Divine Presence (Fisher, 2005). As a consequence of the persistent Qurayshite persecution that they experienced in Mecca, however, Muhammad and his Muslim followers decided to leave Mecca and head for Medina in 622 CE. Their migration, which was referred to as the hijrah, is now considered as the beginning of the Muslim era. (Risher, 2005).
